After a successful 2024-2025, the Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) and the Tezos Foundation have launched an expanded partnership for 2025-2026.

After a successful 2024-2025, the Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) and the Tezos Foundation have launched an expanded partnership for 2025-2026.

The partnership will feature a new series of artists commissions exploring blockchain as a creative material, with a focus on FA2 smart contracts, a standardized framework in the Tezos ecosystem that allows anyone to create and manage different digital assets.

In addition to artist projects, a ​​public workshop track, the FA2 Fellowship, invites a broader community of artists to engage with FA2 through hands-on instruction, mentorship, and guided development. Complementing these two components, the program also includes a series of two live events, featuring performances and time-based pieces.

In the late 1960s, Jäger coined the term "generative photography". Using custom pinhole cameras, he created photographs revealing how light is captured within the camera itself. Nearly 60 years on, Bloom worked with Jäger to create Contingent, made from a digitized dataset of the original pinhole photographs. Brightness and color in the image are reorganized as inputs into a geometric mesh. The program reshapes the mesh based on the specific color values at each point. Where and when the piece is viewed, plus the act of viewing itself, change and complicate the artwork for everyone in real time.

Each MoMI x Tezos commission is accompanied by a process image you can collect at no cost in person at the musem or online. Minting powered by objkt.

The collectible image is a deconstruction of James Bloom's process, transforming Gottfried Jäger's "light image" into digital "data image." Bloom first isolates the points of coloured light from their ground, he then imports the image as a light distribution mesh, where light intensity is converted into 3D digital form. Additionally, he derives the surface texture for the 3D object from Jäger’s photograph. At the heart of the partnership is the FA2 Fellowship, a series of virtual educational sessions focused on smart contracts and creative blockchain applications.

Tezos’s FA2 standard offers powerful capabilities for artists, enabling multi-asset structures, batch operations, and low-cost transactions that are ideal for complex, interactive works. The FA2 fellowship empowers artists and builders to learn from industry experts about the Tezos blockchain smart contract applications and develop their own projects under the guidance of MoMI curator Regina Harsanyi and participating lecturers. The program culminates in two finalists being comissioned to present a collaborative project on the MoMI Schlosser Media Wall for a 2-month exhibition period.

By completing 4 sessions, fellowship participants also qualify to apply for the Microgrants to receive further support in developing their projects.
